Hello there,

KHWAB was established in 1979 which is a major institution in the State engaged in the rehabilitation of deaf children, and is a major residential school for the deaf in South India.

The school is now in constant touch with the US-based Graham Bell Institute for the deaf for collecting information and technology for imparting proper training to the students.

Shri. K.M.Patil, the founder Secretary of the association and a participant of the gramodyoga and sarvodaya movements, says that in the mid-seventies, there was only one deaf and dumb school at Mysore for children with these disabilities in the State. Only 10 students were admitted each academic year in that school.

We felt that such a situation was an “injustice” to such children and their parents. We decided to establish a school for the deaf in Bangalore and founded the KHWA in a rented building at Jeevan Bhima Nagar. The KHWA made arrangements for imparting education for 16 deaf students at free of cost. The association later realized that the parents in rural areas would not be able send their children to Bangalore unless residential facilities were provided. In 1980,we shifted the school to an other rented building and provided those facilities. This elicited good response from parents.

Later, the KHWAB decided to impart education to deaf children along with normal children. Though it introduced English medium to attract the latter, the idea did not get good response. The association approached the Union Government for establishing an orphanage for handicapped children. The Government granted help and another 25 children joined the school. In 1982, the Honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri. R.Gundu Rao, paid a surprise visit to the KHWA premises and sanctioned a site measuring 22,500 square feet at Jeevan Bhima Nagar. The NRSD now has its own building with 34 class rooms, kitchen and a community dinning hall. The school has equipment worth over Rs. 10 lakhs. Two hundred normal children are also studying in the school now and our Hassan branch is imparting education to more than 200 students.

We are grateful to all the donors who make our sustenance and work possible. We thank our associates who share our passion to serve the less fortunate in society. And we are indebted to all our colleagues within the organization, whose inspiring motivation and tireless efforts keep us going from strength to strength.
